In a campaign video released on October 27, Kamala Harris committed to forming a Puerto Rico Opportunity Economy Task Force as part of her presidency. Combining the efforts of the federal government, the private sector, and nonprofits, Harris’s plan calls for the creation of thousands of new jobs for Puerto Ricans as well as for funding to make urgently needed repairs and improvements to the island’s energy grid. The Harris video was published one day after a speaker at a rally for Donald Trump gleefully referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” in remarks that were livestreamed far and wide.
